How to Read a Supplement Label Without Getting Lost

Supplement labels can feel busy. Once you know where to look, the important information becomes much easier to find.

Start with these four places

  • Serving size: how much to take at one time or in one day.
  • Supplement Facts: the nutrients or ingredients and their amounts.
  • Directions: how and when to use the product.
  • Age guidance: whether the formula is intended for adults, children, or both.

Do not assume two products are interchangeable just because their front labels look similar. If you take medications, have a health condition, are pregnant, or are buying for a child, ask a pharmacist or clinician before using a new supplement.
